OpenAI has strengthened its leadership team by hiring Gabor Cselle, the former CEO and co-founder of Pebble, a startup that aimed to challenge Twitter’s dominance. Cselle joined OpenAI in October, according to his LinkedIn profile, and officially announced his new role in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter). In his announcement, Cselle expressed enthusiasm for his new position, stating, “Will share more about what I’m working on in due time. Learning a lot already.”
Cselle brings a wealth of entrepreneurial experience to OpenAI, having successfully founded and sold two companies prior to Pebble. His first venture, reMail, a Y Combinator-backed mobile email startup, was acquired by Google. His second company, Namo Media, a native advertising startup, was sold to Twitter before the social media giant was acquired by Elon Musk and rebranded as X. Nearly a decade ago, Cselle worked at Twitter as a group product manager, focusing on enhancing the home timeline, user onboarding, and improving experiences for logged-out users. In 2016, he transitioned to Google, where he served as a director at the tech giant’s Area 120 incubator, overseeing various spin-offs.
In 2022, Cselle co-founded Pebble (originally named T2) alongside Michael Greer, the former engineering head at Discord. Pebble emphasized safety and moderation within its platform, attracting a dedicated community and securing funding from notable angel investors, including Rich Miner, co-founder of Android. Despite these efforts, Pebble struggled to achieve significant growth and ultimately shut down in October of the previous year. However, the company made a comeback as a Mastodon instance in November, continuing its mission in a new format.
Earlier this year, in May, Cselle joined the accelerator South Park Commons, where he developed a variety of generative AI prototypes, including a tribute to the viral HQ Trivia game. This hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI technologies positions him well for his role at OpenAI, where he is expected to contribute to a secretive and high-impact project within the organization.
Cselle’s move to OpenAI coincides with significant staffing changes at competing firms. On the same weekend, Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI, announced the hiring of Alex Rodrigues, the founder of autonomous trucking firm Embark. Rodrigues, who led Embark through a SPAC merger in 2021 before its acquisition by Applied Intuition in 2023, will join Anthropic as an AI safety researcher. This parallel recruitment highlights the intense competition and rapid talent acquisition occurring within the AI industry as companies vie to advance their technological capabilities and safety measures.
OpenAI has not yet disclosed specific details about the project Cselle will be working on, maintaining an air of secrecy around its initiatives. However, his extensive background in product management, entrepreneurship, and AI development is expected to play a crucial role in advancing OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
