Google has begun rolling out offline support for Google Maps on Wear OS, marking a significant update for smartwatch users. This feature, which was announced alongside the release of the Pixel Watch 3, enhances the usability of Google Maps on wearable devices by allowing users to access maps even when they’re not connected to the internet.
After updating to the latest version, users will find that the app now automatically downloads offline maps from their phone to their watch. When you open Google Maps on your Wear OS device, you’ll be greeted with an explanation of how “Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch.” This seamless integration ensures that users have access to crucial navigation tools at all times, regardless of connectivity. A new “Offline maps” page has been added just above the Settings menu, making it easy to manage downloaded maps directly from your watch.
The watch app intelligently downloads a map of your current area and syncs any offline areas you’ve already saved on your phone. This feature not only improves convenience but also ensures that your maps are up to date, as the app will automatically sync these maps when the watch is connected to Wi-Fi and charging. Users can easily monitor how much space these offline maps are taking up on their device and delete them with a simple tap if needed.
In addition to offline maps, Google Maps for Wear OS has introduced a new “Search & go” Tile. This Tile offers quick access to your Home and Work shortcuts, making it easier than ever to navigate to frequently visited locations. The Tile also includes a microphone icon for voice input, allowing users to search for destinations hands-free. Furthermore, a quick tap on “Map” from the Tile takes you directly into the map view, bypassing the main feed and saving time when you need directions quickly.
One helpful visual cue added to the map view is a slashed cloud icon that appears next to the time when you’re offline, reminding users that they’re currently using offline maps. This feature is available in version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS, which we’ve tested on the Pixel Watch 2. It’s worth noting that we’re also enrolled in the public Google Maps beta, so this feature may initially roll out to beta users before becoming widely available.
This update is a welcome addition for Wear OS users, particularly those who rely on their smartwatch for navigation while traveling or in areas with poor connectivity. By bringing offline maps to wearable devices, Google is continuing to enhance the functionality and independence of smartwatches, making them more versatile and useful in everyday scenarios.
