Sentient, an innovative open-source development platform for artificial intelligence (AI), has successfully raised $85 million in a seed funding round. The funding round was spearheaded by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, with significant contributions from Pantera Capital and Framework Ventures. This substantial investment marks a pivotal moment for Sentient, aiming to transform the AI development landscape.

The July 2 announcement detailed that the funds will be utilized to hire engineers and further develop Sentient’s open AI platform. As an AI research organization, Sentient aspires to enable AI developers to monetize their open-source models and data, much like other ecosystems such as the Super Intelligence Alliance.

“We are in an era reminiscent of the 1995 closed-source software landscape. At present, the dominance of closed-source AI has centralized immense power with a few organizations. Although open-source AI development exists, it lacks sufficient incentives for developers and does not enable them to be equal stakeholders,” the company stated. This underscores the need for a paradigm shift towards open-source AI development, where developers are recognized as equal stakeholders and adequately incentivized.

Sentient is backed by a trio of influential figures in the tech and academic worlds: Sandeep Nailwal, the founder of Polygon; Pramod Viswanath, a Princeton professor and co-inventor of the technology powering the 4G wireless standard; and Himanshu Tyagi, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science. Their combined expertise and vision are central to Sentient’s mission of evolving open artificial general intelligence.

The startup’s underlying blockchain protocol and incentive mechanism are designed to ensure economic alignment for developers, addressing a significant issue in the current AI landscape. Joey Krug, partner at Founders Fund, highlighted this problem, saying, “Currently, anyone is able to just copy models without paying for them and Sentient aims to solve this incentive problem which disincentivizes open-source AI.” This approach aims to create a sustainable ecosystem where developers are motivated to contribute to open-source AI projects.

Sentient’s testnet is set to be available in the current quarter of 2024, offering a glimpse into the practical applications and potential of their platform. This will be a crucial step in demonstrating the viability and effectiveness of their model.

The seed funding round attracted a wide array of investors, reflecting broad confidence in Sentient’s vision. Among the backers were Robot Ventures, Symbolic Capital, Dao5, Delphi, Primitive Ventures, Nomad, Hack VC, Arrington Capital, Hypersphere, IDG, Topology, Protagonist, Folius, Sky9, Canonical Crypto, Dispersion Capital, Mirana, Foresight, HashKey, Spartan, and others. This diverse group of supporters underscores the high level of interest and belief in Sentient’s potential to disrupt the AI and blockchain sectors.

Sentient’s vision of an open-source AI ecosystem, supported by robust economic incentives, could significantly alter the dynamics of AI development. By enabling developers to monetize their contributions effectively, Sentient aims to democratize AI innovation and ensure that a broader range of stakeholders can participate in and benefit from advancements in the field.
