Samsung Electronics is preparing a bold move that could reshape the smartphone AI landscape. According to sources familiar with the matter, the tech giant is nearing a deal to integrate Perplexity AI’s technology as the default assistant on its next-generation Galaxy S26 series, potentially displacing Google’s Gemini from its privileged position on Samsung devices.

The proposed partnership represents more than just an assistant swap—it’s a strategic play to reduce Samsung’s reliance on Google while injecting fresh competition into the mobile AI space. Plans call for announcing the integration this year, with full deployment on Galaxy S26 devices launching in early 2026. Samsung is also expected to participate significantly in Perplexity’s upcoming $500 million funding round at a $14 billion valuation, signaling a long-term commitment.

The collaboration could extend far beyond basic voice assistance. Insider discussions have explored embedding Perplexity’s conversational search directly into Samsung’s Internet browser, enhancing the underperforming Bixby assistant with Perplexity’s technology, and even co-developing an AI-infused operating system. This multi-layered approach mirrors Apple’s strategy of diversifying AI partnerships rather than depending on a single provider.

For Perplexity, the Samsung deal would mark its second major smartphone integration following its Motorola partnership, positioning the startup as a legitimate challenger to ChatGPT, Claude AI, and Google Gemini. The move comes as Google faces increasing antitrust scrutiny over its mobile dominance—court documents recently revealed Google pays Samsung an “enormous sum” to maintain default placement of its services.

Industry analysts suggest the partnership could address Samsung’s AI shortcomings. “Bixby still can’t match rival assistants, so bringing in Perplexity makes strategic sense,” noted fan site SammyFans. The shift also sets up a potential showdown between Perplexity-powered Samsung Internet and Google’s Chrome browser on Android devices.

While terms remain fluid, the negotiations underscore how quickly the mobile AI landscape is evolving. With Samsung controlling nearly 20% of the global smartphone market, choosing Perplexity over Google could trigger seismic changes in how billions of users interact with AI on their devices—and redistribute the balance of power in the ongoing AI assistant wars.
