
The highly anticipated Polaris Dawn mission, which was set to make history as the first space mission to feature a spacewalk conducted by a crew of private citizens, has been delayed by 24 hours, SpaceX announced. Initially scheduled for an early Monday launch, the mission is now targeting a liftoff no earlier than Tuesday, pending the completion of preflight checkouts. The delay was announced by SpaceX on Wednesday via their social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Polaris Dawn mission is significant not only for its ambitious goals but also for the high-altitude trajectory it will take. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, carrying the all-civilian crew, will ascend to an altitude of 870 miles above Earth—over three times higher than the International Space Station—before settling into a cruising orbit around 435 miles above the planet. This altitude marks the highest human spaceflight since the Apollo missions to the moon in the 1970s.
Commanding the mission is billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, founder and CEO of Shift4, who previously led the first all-civilian space mission aboard a SpaceX spacecraft in 2021. Joining Isaacman on this groundbreaking mission are pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet and mission specialists Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, both of whom are SpaceX engineers. The crew arrived at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida earlier this week to prepare for their launch.
When the mission does lift off, the crew will undertake a five-day journey that includes testing new space technologies and conducting approximately 40 scientific experiments aimed at understanding the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body. One of the mission’s most notable challenges will be passing through the Van Allen radiation belts, a treacherous zone of high-energy particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field. The crew’s spacecraft will be carefully oriented to minimize exposure to this radiation, a critical concern for future missions to the moon and Mars.
The Polaris Dawn mission is also set to break new ground by attempting the first-ever spacewalk conducted by private citizens. Unlike traditional spacecraft equipped with airlocks, the SpaceX Dragon capsule will require full depressurization of the cabin before the hatch is opened, exposing the entire crew to the vacuum of space. To prepare for this, all four crew members will wear specially designed Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits created by SpaceX, which will supply them with oxygen through tethers.
In addition to its technical and scientific goals, the Polaris Dawn mission holds personal significance for its crew. Anna Menon, who serves as both a mission specialist and medical officer, plans to read a children’s book she co-authored, titled “Kisses from Space,” to her two young children while in orbit—a poignant reminder of the human side of space exploration.
Polaris Dawn is the first of three planned missions under the Polaris Program, each designed to push the boundaries of human spaceflight and test the technologies needed for deep-space exploration. While details about the second mission remain sparse, it is expected to further expand the capabilities tested in Polaris Dawn. The third and final mission of the Polaris Program aims to achieve the first human spaceflight aboard SpaceX’s Starship rocket, a vehicle intended to play a key role in NASA’s Artemis program by transporting astronauts from lunar orbit to the moon’s surface.
As SpaceX continues to refine its technologies and prepare for the eventual launch, the delay of Polaris Dawn by 24 hours serves as a reminder of the meticulous care and precision required in the pursuit of space exploration. When the mission does take off, it will not only mark a milestone for the Polaris Program but also for the broader field of commercial space travel.
