Researchers from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) have uncovered intriguing insights into the genetic factors influencing coffee consumption. Utilizing a genome-wide association study (GWAS), the team compared genetic data and self-reported coffee consumption from large datasets in the U.S. and the U.K. to identify genetic variants associated with coffee intake.
Lead researcher Hayley Thorpe, a postdoctoral researcher at Western’s Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, explained that the study aimed to pinpoint regions on the genome linked to the likelihood of consuming coffee. The analysis drew on data from 130,153 U.S.-based 23andMe research participants and compared it with a UK Biobank database encompassing 334,649 U.K. residents. This extensive comparison revealed a genetic influence on coffee consumption, indicating that inherited gene variants play a role in determining an individual’s coffee intake.
The study, published in Neuropsychopharmacology, found consistent positive genetic associations between coffee consumption and health outcomes such as obesity and substance use in both the U.S. and U.K. populations. However, Thorpe emphasized that these findings do not suggest that drinking coffee causes these conditions. Instead, they indicate that genetic predisposition for coffee intake is related to these traits in some way.
Interestingly, the study revealed contrasting genetic associations between coffee consumption and psychiatric conditions when comparing the two populations. In the 23andMe dataset, coffee intake genetics showed a positive correlation with anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression. However, the UK Biobank data exhibited the opposite pattern, with negative genetic correlations.
Thorpe noted that these unexpected results could be due to various factors, including differences in tea and coffee consumption habits between the U.S. and U.K. populations. The researchers stressed that more work is needed to understand the complex relationships between coffee, other substance use, and health issues across different environments.
This study, conducted in collaboration with Schulich Medicine & Dentistry professor Jibran Khokar and UCSD professors Sandra Sanchez-Roige and Abraham Palmer, adds to the growing body of literature on the genetic underpinnings of coffee consumption. While it provides valuable insights, it also highlights the need for further research to unravel the intricate connections between genetics, coffee intake, and health outcomes.
