Obesity is a complex condition influenced by numerous factors, and recent research suggests that genetics play a significant role. A new study led by Dr. Mattia Frontini, a British Heart Foundation senior fellow and associate professor in cellular biology at the University of Exeter, highlights a clear genetic trigger for obesity. According to the study published in the journal Med, the research used data from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database that tracks people long-term, to uncover the impact of a particular gene mutation on weight gain.

The researchers focused on individuals with two faulty copies of the SMIM1 gene. Their findings revealed that women with this mutation weighed an additional 4.6 kilograms (10.14 pounds), and men weighed an additional 2.4 kilograms (5.29 pounds), compared to those without the mutation. Dr. Frontini explained that these faulty gene copies lead to decreased thyroid function and lower energy expenditure, causing the body to store more fat despite similar food intake.

Dr. Philipp Scherer, director of the Touchstone Diabetes Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, praised the study for identifying a specific gene mutation linked to obesity. “It’s an exciting study in that it puts a new gene on the map,” Scherer said. “We think we’re looking at a gene here that we can further study.”

Despite its significance, the SMIM1 gene mutation is relatively rare, affecting about 1 in 5,000 people. This means that while the mutation does not explain obesity in the broader population, it does highlight the role genetics can play in weight gain for a subset of individuals. For those affected, understanding the genetic basis of their condition can be enlightening and potentially transformative.

Thyroid dysfunction, which is common and affects nearly 2% of the UK population, is regularly treated with relatively inexpensive medication. The next step for researchers is to determine whether people with the SMIM1 mutation could benefit from such treatments. Dr. Frontini expressed hope that treating the thyroid dysfunction in these individuals could improve their quality of life.
