At its Made On YouTube event on Wednesday, YouTube unveiled Communities, a new feature designed to enhance interaction between creators and their fans. Communities functions similarly to a Discord server, integrated directly into a creator’s channel, aiming to provide a dedicated space for more meaningful engagement without the need for external platforms like Discord or Reddit.

With Communities, viewers can now post and interact with other fans directly within a creator’s channel, moving beyond the traditional comment sections of videos. This new space allows fans to share their own content and engage in discussions over shared interests. For example, a fitness creator’s Community could feature posts from fans sharing videos and photos from their latest hikes, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared passion among subscribers.

Initially, the Communities feature is available exclusively to subscribers. Bangaly Kaba, director of Product Management at YouTube, emphasized the importance of this new space during the event, saying, “You know that feeling, that magic, that joy that comes from finding a group of people that just get you. Communities is a place where you can choose to create that with your fans. This is a place where you and your fans can come together to build even deeper connections over the topics and videos you love, not just posting updates between uploaders or asking for opinions or ideas, but for the first time, subscribers will spark their own discussions with you and with each other.”

YouTube envisions Communities as a dedicated area for ongoing conversations and connections, allowing creators to maintain control over their content while enabling fans to engage more interactively. Unlike the existing Community feature, which was launched in 2016 and allows creators to share text and images with viewers without enabling viewer-to-viewer interaction, Communities provides a forum-style setting where discussions can evolve naturally over time.

Currently, YouTube is testing Communities on mobile devices with a select group of creators. The company plans to expand the feature to more creators later this year, with a broader rollout to additional channels scheduled for early 2025. This phased approach allows YouTube to refine the feature based on feedback and ensure it meets the needs of both creators and their audiences effectively.

The introduction of Communities marks a significant step forward in how creators and fans interact on YouTube. By providing a built-in space for fans to connect and share, YouTube is fostering a more engaged and cohesive community around each creator’s content. This development not only enhances the user experience but also strengthens the bond between creators and their most dedicated supporters, paving the way for more dynamic and interactive content ecosystems on the platform.

As YouTube continues to evolve, features like Communities demonstrate the platform’s commitment to enhancing user engagement and providing creators with the tools they need to build and nurture their fan bases. By integrating a Discord-like environment directly into channels, YouTube is setting a new standard for social interaction within video platforms, ensuring that fans have a place to connect, share, and grow together alongside their favorite creators.
